Cabinet Painting

A factory-grade finish, done in place.

Direct answer

Cabinet painting refinishes existing kitchen or bath cabinetry with a hard, durable coating rather than replacing the boxes and doors. Done properly it involves degreasing, deglossing or sanding, a bonding primer and two to three sprayed finish coats of a cabinet-grade enamel. It typically costs a fraction of replacement and takes about one to two weeks for an average kitchen.

What it depends on

  • Cabinet material: solid wood, wood veneer, thermofoil and laminate each behave differently, and thermofoil in poor condition is often not a good candidate.
  • Grain. Oak requires grain filling if a smooth finish is expected.
  • Number of doors and drawers, which drives spray and dry time.
  • Whether the interiors of boxes are included.
  • Color change severity and the coating system selected.

Fairfield County considerations

Many Fairfield County kitchens have solid wood cabinetry from the 1990s and 2000s that is structurally excellent and simply dated. These are ideal candidates for refinishing.

Older homes often have inset or partial-overlay doors with detailed profiles, where a sprayed finish holds the profile better than brushing.

Kitchens are the hardest working painted surface in the house, so a waterborne alkyd or catalyzed enamel is worth the difference over a standard wall paint.

Typical process

  1. Assessment. Confirm the cabinetry is a good refinishing candidate and identify the material.
  2. Removal and labeling. Doors, drawer fronts and hardware removed and labeled for exact reinstallation.
  3. Degrease and sand. Kitchen grease removed thoroughly, then surfaces sanded or deglossed for adhesion.
  4. Repair and fill. Dents, chips and grain filled where a smooth finish is specified.
  5. Bonding primer. Sprayed, sanded smooth between coats.
  6. Finish coats. Two to three sprayed coats of cabinet-grade enamel, doors finished off-site or in a controlled area.
  7. Cure and reinstall. Hardware reinstalled after adequate cure; full hardness continues developing for several weeks.

Cost factors

We do not publish flat prices for work we haven't seen. These are the variables that actually determine what a project costs:

  • Door and drawer count
  • Whether box interiors are included
  • Grain filling for oak
  • Coating system (waterborne alkyd vs. catalyzed)
  • Hardware changes or new hinges

Professional perspective

Degreasing is the step people skip. Kitchen cabinets accumulate an invisible film of cooking oil, especially above the range and near the dishwasher. If that film is still there, even the best bonding primer will release, usually at exactly the doors people touch most.

Related questions

How much does cabinet painting cost?
Cost depends primarily on door and drawer count and the coating system. We price cabinet projects from an in-person count and inspection rather than a per-linear-foot figure, because two kitchens of the same size can differ substantially in door count and condition.
How long until I can use my kitchen normally?
Doors are typically reinstalled within one to two weeks. The finish is usable immediately but continues hardening for two to four weeks, so we recommend gentle use during that period.
